April 21, 2020

Five of the six cherry trees along 19th Street adjoining the Park had died. The Friends group petitioned Parks and Recreation for replacements, and five new hawthorne trees were planted three days before Arbor Day.

The Friends of Matthias Baldwin Park will take responsibility for watering the trees with 10-15 gallons of water per tree per week.

Squirrels (and car-parkers) take notice!
The young hawthorn trees show off the origin of their name with two-inch thorns.
There are two hawthorns in the Park already, as discussed here. The two in the Park are thornless cultivars, while the street trees are thorn-bearing Washington hawthorns.
